Turn the Mic Around: News Deserts in American Media

▪︎ FEBRUARY 16, 2021 ▪︎ 10:00 A.M. MT ▪︎

What happens when media options serving local communities are reduced to zero? News deserts leave neighborhoods devoid of information that residents rely upon to make informed choices and hold local leaders accountable. In this month’s Turn the Mic Around conversation, guest E’Jaaz Mason, Program Director with LEDE New Orleans, will discuss with Internews President Jeanne Bourgault the causes of news deserts and ideas for fostering vibrant, local information ecosystems. The virtual conversation is scheduled for 10:00 a.m. MT on February 16, 2022.

Turn the Mic Around is Internews’ conversation series. Each month, you’ll hear behind-the-scenes stories from journalists operating in conflict zones, emerging democracies, and humanitarian crises as they deliver trustworthy information to communities that need it most. These conversations are worthy of your time, and we’ll keep them short: a 15-minute interview with 15 minutes for you to ask questions.
