Apply to the GNI News Equity Fund

The News Equity Fund is a multi-million dollar commitment from the Google News Initiative (GNI) to provide cash awards to news organizations that serve underrepresented communities around the world. Applicants will receive funding to support and expand their news operations.

How to Apply 
GNI is accepting applications through July 21st, 11:59 pm PT, and encourage organizations and individuals to apply as soon as possible as GNI will be reviewing applications on a rolling basis.

Applicants are asked via the online application form to provide basic information about their publication and overall organization (if applicable) and inform GNI of how the funds will be spent.

Eligibility Requirement
–Independent journalists and small and medium-sized news organizations producing original news for minority and underrepresented audiences. 
–Eligible applicants must have a verifiable digital presence (website) and have been in operation for at least 12 months.
–Eligible applicants should publish regularly. 
–The News Equity Fund is open to independent newsrooms employing between 1 – 50  full-time employees (FTE) and journalistic content and news creators/freelancers. 
–Organizations must be incorporated or registered in one of the eligible geographies. Unincorporated organizations must be based in one of the eligible geographies.
–Eligible applicants need to have a focus on core news provision, i.e. not lifestyle, sports, business-to-business.
–Eligible applicants can include for-profit or nonprofit traditional news organizations, digital natives, newsletters, podcasts, radio and/or TV broadcasters.  
–Government-owned entities or entities affiliated/owned by a political party are not eligible to apply.
