Colorado Press Association’s First Amendment Award

The Colorado Press Association‘s First Amendment Award recognizes the best example of protecting or advancing freedom of information principles, and/or overcoming significant resistance to the application of the First Amendment. This includes, but is not limited to fighting the threat of censorship in America, overcoming uneasiness with regard to press credibility, government secrecy at all levels, and instilling in the public an appreciation of its need as well  as its right to know.

Awareness of First Amendment issues isn’t limited to efforts by the press; it is strengthened by  the actions of people in local communities, in public or private organizations, in local or state  government.

Entries could include news and feature stories, editorials, staff-written columns and house ads  reflecting the newspaper’s service to the First Amendment, or any other documents or  explanation of a newspaper, organization or person’s commitment to ensuring freedom of the press. Previous entries  have ranged from court actions filed by a newspaper to public awareness campaigns conducted by the newspaper or in partnership with other organizations.

Nomination package should include:
Nomination summary that explains why the nominee deserves the award.
If applicable, any additional supporting documentation to assist the board of directors in  making a decision.

The deadline for nominations is March 15th and winners will be announced at the Colorado Press Association Annual Convention on August 23, 2024!
